amyjomartin's Media: One of my earliest childhood memories was standing at the top of a difficult mountain with my dad.

One of my earliest childhood memories was standing at the top of a difficult mountain with my dad. I was skiing for the first time. We skipped the bunny slope and went straight to the top. In attempt to find my “Why” several years ago, I asked my friend and master Why finder, @SimonSinek for help. He helped me realize my earliest childhood memory is tied to my WHY. He asked if I was scared to go down the mountain. I told him no because my dad is an expert skier and he was there to help me down. I had a guide. Turns out, I have a pattern of seeking difficult black diamond mountains in life and they seek me right back. My WHY is to help other people down the difficult black diamonds of life but I can only do my job when I allow others to help me down as well. We all need guides. This concept took me awhile to grasp. I had many wipeouts and I still have them - just a little less often As you head into your Memorial Day weekend, many of you will spend time with your guide(ers) and guide(es), often disguised as family and friends. I invite you to skip the small talk over a brewski or glass of vino and pose these much more interesting questions: 1. What’s your earliest childhood memory? 2. Why do you do what you do? Is it ironic that I’m in Colorado staring at the Rocky Mountains every day as I walk to the NICU? Probably not. Is it ironic that one of our favorite NICU nurses is also a ski instructor and teaches 3 year olds how to ski at a mountain near by? Nope. (She said she would teach Linc at 2.5 years old. Thanks auntie nurse, L! Is it ironic that the hospital that I’ve been at for 40 days engaged me 2 months prior to share my WHY to their audience? Nope. Negative, ghost guider. Lincoln has simply guided me back to my Why. He was my WHY re-born - a 2 pound bundle of potent WHY! We guide each other. Hat tip to all my guide(ers) and my guidees. Work-life integration vs. separation. I’ve always subscribed to this philosophy. It’s not for everyone and that’s okay. As I navigate one of the toughest black diamonds of my life, I personally find peace and joy in my life’s work. It’s actually a reprieve from the stress of being a new NICU mom. For now, for me, it’s working well to keep “working”. The conversation and opinions around when new moms go back to work or don’t go back to work is a loaded one. Everyone has a different situation. There is no right or wrong. There’s no room for anyone’s opinion about someone else’s scenario. There’s no room for anyone to project their feelings on anyone else. This mom sh*t is hard enough! I’m grateful for the tribe around me that’s only been supportive of my (current) approach. Why have they been supportive? Because I only allow those people in my orbit. I see some not-so-kind banter going on in this virtual space and it’s unfortunate. There’s no shame in the “work or no work” game. There should only be pride and support. Being able to blend work and life is one of the upsides I love most about entrepreneurship. When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like dreaded work. When you’re doing your life’s work, it fuels. I love helping other women find their fuel. It’s my life’s work. I’m honored to get to do it and, for now, I’ll keep on keeping on by “working”. And I reserve the right to change my mind at any (mom)ent. PS - I spy a little 4 pounder in a big boy bassinet. He’s graduated from his growinator (incubator). I love working next to him and roll his bassinet right next to me so we can stare at one another in awe. Lincoln: day 1 and day 39 . “Tell me what’s good.” My NICU best friend and fellow mom (@sd_hauser) has been saying this to her child’s doctors for months. She was ushered to the NICU via helicopter and her baby was born much earlier than planned. She’s been through what most people would consider the worst imaginable situations as her baby has fought for their life. And yet her strength has not wavered. On multiple occasions, during dire straights, she has asked her docs this question “What’s good? Tell me what’s good.” That’s what she focuses on. That’s where she begins. It’s a very wise strategy that has allowed her and her family to defy odds. . My new friend has been showing me the NICU ropes since the day we arrived. We text over the pod walls daily and she helps guide me through the micro preemie parenting maze of emotions. . Today was a big day for my friend and her family so Lincoln wore his fight shirt to support his best (and very first) friend. They are the co-founders of their very own tiny but mighty fight club. . What’s good!? We have started talking about where we will vacation together in the future when the two kiddos (NICU BFFs) get older. . Are you navigating something tough? First ask yourself, “What’s good?” . Getting some tough news? Ask the person delivering the info: “Tell me what’s good.” . Start there. It’s a simple and effective, sometimes lifesaving, first step. . Much love to my NICU BFF and her family next door. You’re one helluva strong unit. Fight on! . . . #preemie #preemiebaby #preemiestrong #nicu #newmom #newmomlife #babylincolnlogs

I’m turning the big 4-0 in a matter of days (47 to be exact). I’ve had this recent overwhelming urge and self-inflicted pressure to “level up” before I turn 40 and bring Lincoln home. My birthday might even fall on Lincoln’s “homecoming” day. On one hand, it’s an intense, all-consuming feeling that includes lists, deadlines, milestones and of course ... spreadsheets! On the other hand, it’s comical and makes me giggle. Hello, old pattern, old friend. I see you trying to be in control while flirting with the idea of perfection. That’s cute, Super Woman. What the heck does “level up” even mean? Lose the baby weight? Some how make sure our home, which I will not have been to in 3+ months, is in perfect order ready for Lincoln? Have the book I’ve been working on written by this magical date on the calendar? Instead of subscribing to my old patterns, I’m committed to a new approach: To focus on how I want to FEEL on the inside verses the tangible results I want to SEE on the outside. In my experience, the feeling, if focused on, will show up on the outside as a symptom in whatever way it’s meant to anyway. Goal setting is an art and science. My altered goal is a feeling. In order to achieve this, I’m committed to a Quantum Leap. Quantum Leap (defined) - You must release your current belief and adapt a new one. A sudden and significant advance. It’s one thing to KNOW something. It’s another to PRACTICE it daily. How do you all approach big milestone birthdays? Anything special you do to prepare for the next chapter on the calendar? I want to hear! And thanks to @ebailey_fitness @elainewellness @suzybatiz for talking this through with me. . . . “Play full out.” This is an internal message I keep hearing since Lincoln was born. I’m not precisely sure where it’s coming from but it’s been getting louder and louder. It’s time to play full out in life. And this hasn’t been a whisper it’s more of an instruction. . The directive is to PLAY FULL OUT. . I translate this as going on the offensive. There’s a difference between playing to win and playing not to lose. It’s time to get proactive, get into the driver’s seat of life and stop being a passenger. Put your foot on the gas with intention, not to “hustle” but to fully LIVE. I thought I was already doing this and after some reflection, I’m seeing areas where I’ve been cheating the game. . Everything has become more acute since our micro man was born. I’m still processing these messages I’ve been hearing? receiving? I’m guessing it’s my own soul echoing things back to me. Things, sometimes acute logic, that I’ve always known deep down that’s just now coming to the surface due to some big life events and crystal clear clarity. . When I was pregnant with Lincoln, I heard him say things to me at times. Sometimes comical, smarta*sy things that would help get my head straight. I love the banter. I don’t even know how to articulate these messages and the communication without sounding a little … well, out there ... but I’m playing full out so ... whatevs! . Regardless of what these messages are, who’s sending them and where they’re coming from - wow. I LOVE this vocal compass that’s landed in my presence. Am I learning to guide myself even more? Or maybe Lincoln is giving me guidance? The details and the Source don’t matter at the moment. I’ve fully bought in. . It’s pretty darn difficult for a spreadsheet gal to admit she’s been “hearing voices”. Okay, maybe not voices … but you know what I mean. Or maybe you don’t. . The mission, if you choose to accept it, is to PLAY FULL OUT. . I dare you. Try it for one hour, one day, one week. . And if you’d like to hear more about these cues, let me know. Instead of a pendulum swing from spreadsheet gal to spiritual gal, I’m learning to let the two co-exist and play nicely together in the sandbox. . 📸 @emily_costopoulos

Rock on to all the moms out there. Whew, this mom club is no joke. Best club in the world. Today is definitely one of the best days of my life. The gratitude level is leaving me speechless. . However I do have a #BabyLincolnLogs update! The big guy got to pop his top today! What’s that mean? His growinator (incubator) is now a convertible. He’s joining the big kids in the NICU. Training wheels are coming off. Speaking of big jumps, Linc went down a notch on his high-flow oxygen. Use that left over, extra oxygen for some balloons cuz we’re gonna have a par-tay. . I will hold your hand any day, all day, Mr. Linc. Let’s do this life thang. . And to my Mom ... thank you for showing me the ropes. I’m learning from the best. We need guides to help us down the black diamond mountains of life. Our nurses & docs at @uchealthhave been Angel guides along this journey. We tackle daily NICU moguls together. From the moment we arrived, one month ago today, to this very moment, the team that surrounds us 24/7 continues to provide world class expertise, care and compassion. I witness these superheroes groove through their long, sometimes very intense, shifts with grace. From making sure their micro preemie babies keep breathing to changing their mini diapers to consoling parents who are scared sh*tless. They are a special kind of human superhero. The other day, I completely broke down in tears and sure enough, Lincoln’s day nurse was right by my side caring for me with just as much compassion as she gives our little 3-pounder. NICU docs and nurses could run the world. Lincoln is proud to have his first-ever clothing be a nod to his superheroes. He’s waving his gratitude flag high. To the team at UCHealth and all the medical caretakers across the globe, THANK you. And yes, how exciting that Linc gets to wear clothes! This is the first time he’s ever worn clothes. Let the mom shopping begin! And Lincoln had a positive eye exam yesterday, hence some of the puffiness. Sorrow shared is halved. Joy shared is doubled. . This is Lincoln a month ago. I want to thank all of the Internet Aunties and Uncles across the world who have given my family and I so much love and support. I’m not BS-ing ya here, it’s been a VERY positive force in our lives. We feel and receive your energy. It’s working! Lincoln is thriving in his growinator. Up and to the right. 📈 . I always say that humans decide if social media is positive or negative. It’s just technology. We decide the impact. A few years ago I did a clinical research study to see whether or not what we post and do on social media impacts our behavior offline. I’ll spare you from the details of the study right now but the net-net is that it DOES. The virtual world and physical world are connected. I know that intuitively and the research I conducted (shout out to Dr. Zeev Kain) proved the theory but it wasn’t until recently with Lincoln that I FEEL it in my bones. . It’s ironic (or not? I should ask Alanis Morissette) that I’ve spent the past decade of my career focused on innovating how we use social communication. And here I am tapping into the social spigot for support during one of the most intense times of my life. . THANK YOU, INTERNET AUNTIES & UNCLES. Boyrrito. My first swaddle job. Not too shabby, eh? . Lincoln started developmental (physical) therapy last week. It’s pretty amazing that these ‘littles’ (official medical term) start this therapy at 2-3 lbs in weight. We are focused on positive touch and transitions so when Lincoln is touched he doesn’t freeze and stop breathing. Typically he would have been in utero for 90 more days than he was so this new world of his is extremely foreign. . In the NICU, Western medicine trumps all others and I’m not arguing with the docs, nurses and machines that are helping to keep my baby’s lungs, heart and brain developing properly. They work proven magic. Years ago, a 27-weeker wouldn’t have had the opportunity that Lincoln now has. I’m learning the lingo, %’s and chart his daily stats in my trusty homemade spreadsheet. Yep, I’m that mom who shows up to rounds with her own computer. The docs & nurses don’t mind, although they haven’t given me scrubs quite yet. . And .... . to compliment the traditional medicine & spreadsheets, I’ve developed my own form of medicine, I call Mom Medicine (wink). A blend of mom logic, intuition and Renegadeness with a splash of woo-woo to balance out the stats and number tracking. . I’ve been reading & learning about various forms of alternative therapies. Or as some may call it woo-woo medicine. . Lincoln and I listen to at least a few songs a day and we try to take 100 consecutive deep breathes a day. Dr. Gay Hendricks, my mentor’s, mentor (@SuzyBatiz), has some resources on the “YES” breath. I refreshed my memory on the technique and put it to work. It’s not necessarily intended for NICU babies but Why Not try it!? Also, I may or may not have some rose quartz in Linc’s room that sits right next to the monitors and fancy equipment. 😉 . Innovation is when we do what hasn’t been done and when we blend things that typically don’t go together. When Edison invented the lightbulb, there was no research proving that what he was doing was going to work. It hadn’t been done before! You have to try stuff, even though some people might think you’re cray-cray. . #BabyLincolnLogs . #newmom #innovation #preemie #preemiebaby #preemie

My son will be going home on oxygen. I can’t hold or nurse my baby when I want. No baby shower. Birth plan is out the window. My husband was not there at delivery. 3 months of pregnancy is missing. A relocation overnight to a new city and NICU. The list goes on and on. Yet … Lincoln is alive. I’m alive. The win far outweighs the loss. A family unit and bond has been formed. I’m not always positive. I’m human and I have down moments that I try to work through. I’m more focused on the win and the forward momentum than the loss because it’s literally my strategy. And it’s in my DNA. I teach people to leverage adversity. Now is an opportunity for me to walk the talk. This isn’t about making lemonade out of lemons. It’s about using this situation as a springboard. Turn the adversity into an asset. Sometimes this process is messy. Do I cry? Yep. Nearly daily. Am I tired? Exhausted AF. And I wouldn’t change it for the world. I’m the luckiest Mother in the world. . . . 📸 @emily_costopoulos thank you for taking this photo. These female entrepreneurs invested in themselves and as a result … they’ve leveled up their businesses and their lives. This group of Renegades just graduated from my 3-month intensive Renegade Brand Bootcamp program. I couldn’t be more honored to guide them and bear witness to the expansion that has taken place. It’s been a dream come true for me to work with purpose-driven female founders who are changing the world. By leveraging their brand essence and life story, they’re growing their businesses while living in the intersection of where their purpose, passion and skill collide. After all, that’s where bliss resides. This is a concept I can’t wait to teach Lincoln. Three months ago, this group started out as like-minded and like-hearted strangers. Today, they’re collaborating, supporting, holding one another accountable and mentoring each other. Life-long relationships have been formed. I highlighted each of these ladies in my Instagram stories so take a peek and learn a little more about them. I encourage you to follow their journeys, they have value to share! (Swipe for more 📸’s from @emily_costopoulos who is also a Bootcamp grad.) Happy Graduation & hat tip to you, Renegades! I love ya. To learn more about my program, visit RenegadeBrandBootcamp.com. Some folks have asked how we arrived at Lincoln’s name. There are many reasons. And Lincoln’s name actually found us. I’ll save those stories for another day. However, one influence was this … When I was younger, I had a homework assignment to bring my favorite quote to school. I didn’t have one so I asked my mom about hers. Without hesitation, she said: “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” ― Abraham Lincoln Boom. And just like that, it became my new favorite quote too. To this day, I still love this quote and believe in the power of Abe’s words. My mom is one of the happiest people I know. She’s able to find genuine joy in nearly anything.
