Looking back, I wish I knew the joy and love you would bring into our lives. I wish I had seen through the window to know what would lie ahead so I could have embraced you those first few days and not done so with tears streaming. I will spend the rest of my life shouting the worth of you and everyone like you. I will continue to change the world and seek out others who want to change it with me by telling your story. Cedar, you are worth it all.⁣ ⁣ I started a new feature on the blog where I recap Cedar's week. It is a peek into our lives and what goes on with Cedar. If you are interested, this is a feature I put up every weekend, Cedar Saturday...just click the link in our profile to check it out. @cedarsstory #advocatelikeamother⁣ #theluckyfew

One of the hallmarks of Down Syndrome is that children typically take a bit longer to learn speech and some other skills. However, our children's needs don't simply wait because they are not able to articulate them. It is for this reason that so many parents opt to start teaching their children sign language.⁣ By teaching sign language to our children with Down Syndrome, we are affording them the means to communicate, before the skill of speech comes into play, check out some of these great tips from @dark_cocolove for teaching signs...on the blog today, link in my bio. #signlanguage #babysign #signingwithbaby #theluckyfew #downsyndrome #t21

My hope and sincere desire is that one day a mom will hear the words "Down Syndrome" and her doctor will follow up with something like, "I know this wasn't the path you expected, but your life will still be amazing, and your child will teach you things you never knew you were missing.  You are going to be blessed beyond measure and congratulations." My hope is that one day we will have done such a great job spreading awareness that a diagnosis won't completely cripple a new mom, she will have seen other children and young adults with Down Syndrome and have a much brighter reference point than I once did.  She will likely still grieve but she won't have sheer terror of the unknown and she won't be pressured to terminate because she will have seen the worth and value of individuals with Down Syndrome just by having been exposed to them in the media, on social platforms, and in the public sector. My hope may be a dream right now, but I know that I am working hard to turn the tide as are so many other amazing families. Our children are worth it all. Any doubts, just look into this sweet face and know that the world is a better place because he is in it, and others like him.  #wouldntchangeathing #lovewhatmatters@cedarsstory

This right here, this is what I wish I had found when I first started hitting up Google for some answers to all the questions I had, and there were so many questions in the beginning. My wish is that many mamas coming after me, and their loved ones who want to learn more would find this, and that it would offer comfort in those first few moments. To the dad at the bounce park, Getair Miamisburg, I don’t know you but your son took off with the ball Cedar was playing with today. Your son looked to be about the same age as Cedar, but so much bigger and more agile.  I smiled politely and before I got up to go and get Cedar another ball, as I have done so many times in this situation, you returned with your son.  You didn’t do what every other parent has done, return the ball, apologize and then go play elsewhere, no, you made my day. What you did was sit down next to Cedar, with your son, and teach your son to roll the ball back and forth to Cedar.  You saw that my little boy loved this so much and yours was unsure, but you kept showing your son how happy mine was each time he rolled the ball back to Cedar.  I sat back and watched.  Each time that Cedar rolled the ball to your son, you had your son roll it back and Cedar giggled and clapped, you did too.  I watched in amazement.  Your wife was near by with your other children and we all watched this beautiful example of not only inclusion, but how to really set an example for your child of how to demonstrate interacting with someone different. After playing for a time you noticed Cedar’s shoe coming untied and you gently retied it and then gave him a high 5. I want you to know that you made my heart swell today. I love that there are parents out there teaching their typical children by example, and I felt so happy.  This didn’t feel like the typical, oh give the ball back to the little boy who is different and then move on, this felt genuine and special.  Thank you for what you did today, I am sure that you will also be raising world changers and I appreciate parents like you. @getairsports #getair #faithinhumanity #lovewhatmatters

I am enjoying this boy for as long as I can. I knew before he was born and before we knew of his extra copy of chromosome 21 that he was going to be my last baby. I have finally gotten to the place where I can just enjoy the fact that I get the privilege of walking through each stage of his development at a slower pace. Each of my other 5 children zoomed through the milestones and stages to the point that I feel like I missed so much. Cedar is allowing me the time to soak it all in and enjoy each moment without the warp speed race to the finish line. #letthemstaylittle #instababy #motherhood #momlife #childhoodunplugged #letthembelittle #motherhoodunplugged #documentlife

One of my favorite kinds of stories to share on this blog is the perspective that comes from dads. It is rare, in fact, we only have about 6 stories on the blog written by the all important dads, but they are so much more powerful than most fathers realize. I first became aquainted with Shawn @skrahe77 when he purchased some jewelry from our @6arrowsdesigns website and his natural desire to advocate for his son led me to ask for his story. Shawn beams with pride and joy when telling of his son. A son with Down Syndrome, one father's pride and joy.⁣ ⁣ #babyboy #dadadvocate #homiewithanextrachromie

When I first started looking for books for Cedar was I was disappointed at the lack of books that actually pictured children with Down Syndrome in them. Don't get me wrong, there are a number of good books out there but I just didn't like the artistic pictures, drawings or other ways in which children, like my Cedar, were drawn, they didn't sit well with me. It was then I began thinking about creating a book with actual photos of real children with Down Syndrome. But, I didn't want the book to be about Down Syndrome, no, I just wanted it to be about children. Then it all came together and one sunny day on our farm 10 beautiful children were present to play with farm animals, practice gardening and eat up a tremendous amount of apples. A wonderful photographer friend captured it all and we released the book on 3-21-18, World Down Syndrome Day. If you haven't see it, you can get your own copy on Amazon, Cedar sure loves it!⁣ ⁣ #childrensbook #morealikethandifferent #notbroken #downonthefarmbook

Every day he's tackling Inchstones and we are seeing progress. Little steps forward. Today he let go of a table he was holding onto and stood in space for about 3 seconds. Yesterday he began hollering from another room for "Da-Da-Da" The day before, he attempted to climb on his little John Deere tractor for the first time.
