Some photos from our canoe adventure the year before last. We had planned to make it as far as we could down the Shannon - I've had to trim these down a good bit obviously to make the post in only 10 photos but these were some of the most significant events. We found it quite difficult to find camping spots - a hell of a lot of the Shannon is bordered in these thick, thick reed beds (like 50/60 metres in some places) that make it impossible to get to the shore to set up camp - we tried ploughing into them sometimes to try and reach dry land but either didn't make it or found the shore to be swampy, stagnant and uninhabitable - although we did always find somewhere in the end, after much hardship 😝 It took us five days to make it about a hundred miles, so we were paddling for hours and hours each day, and being completely honest, it was usually a direct battle into the wind, and we rarely had a chance to relax. The Shannon is too slow moving for canoes really, it was like flat water paddling and very hard - so hard we bought an engine boat the next year 😸 Another thing we realised about the Shannon is that it's actually really busy and full of tourists - it's not really the kind of wild adventure we thought it'd be - although we did save a drowning bumblebee with sugar water, stop off at towns for pub lunch, and we found this awesome hunter's hut on the very last night, so there was more than enough to see and do 😸 Lough Ree was the end of us - we were just not prepared for how large and how dangerous it is. I've made another post about the same Lough because the next year it was even hard in our big, covered engine boat, but in the canoe it was really quite scary, even though we hugged the coast, we had a ton of gear in the boat and it was definitely quite rough for an open-top, so after a few hours of battling it, we decided we had to get off and begin the pain in the arse journey back to the car by taxis and buses and then back down to pick the boat back up. As much as I love the canoe, Lady J is definitely like a luxury liner in comparison 😸

Found stones So I know this probably isn't a majority opinion, but I read someone saying somewhere a while ago that ordinary beach stones don't have power like crystals, and I have to say, not only do "ordinary" stones all have their own spirit, personality and powers, but it's also more than possible to find real crystals at the beach. Here I have some of my favourite finds - a gorgeous hagstone I have hanging up for protection that I found on the beach in my hometown, a wierd little geode-thing that I found on a trip to Sligo, and a huge, strange fossil-thing by a lake in Cavan, that looks like a pile of sticks or something. The geode is my favourite, I remember finding it so clearly, I just looked down all of a sudden for no real reason and it twinkled up at me. It's sea-worn in an almost seashell spiral shape, and very strange compared to other geodes I've ever seen in shops and the like - it has a pretty intense healing energy and is my single favourite beach find ever. Beach stones, especially rounded ones, have a very soothing energy. Something about the perfect smoothness and egglike shapes make them seem sacred to me, and most of my collection is rounded stones of various colours. Beach stones can be used much like crystals, and many are made of or include quartz and other minerals. The mineral composition changes from beach to beach as well, so finding free crystals - or letting yourself be found by them - is a great excuse for getting outside and having adventures. Also, a great spell I found when I was much younger for stress, anger and other negative emotions; Head to a body of water and seek out a black stone on the shore. Hold the stone and funnel all of the energy you want to rid yourself of into it. Then throw the stone as far as you can into the body of water, and don't look back as you leave. #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #nature #outdoors #ireland #irish #druid #druidry #adventure #geology #fossil #geode #beachstones #hagstone #crystals

We had a gorgeous trip, the weather was chilly but the sun was warm, when it was out. We went out on Lough Sheelin, and had a great day pottering around and scoping out a spot to sleep. We ended up in a little bay, anchored up, had our dinner and stayed out till the sun went down. We went back out after it went completely dark and stargazed for a bit before turning in, and it was so clear that the sky was literally fuzzy with stars. The next day we paddled to the other side of the little shallow bay where we discovered a tiny old dock, and got out to explore - we couldn't believe it when we found a gorgeous, open, bluebell carpeted forest area, and obviously had to go for a walk, discovering a tiny boathouse with some very old things in it. I feel so rested. The boat is such a low-impact, gorgeous way to get around. We saw maybe four people the whole time, and discovered places so rarely seen and so remote. It nearly killed me to select only ten pictures, so I'll probably have a few more - and I meant to post some other pictures of older adventures, so there is more to come 😸 #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #nature #outdoors #ireland #irish #druid #druidry #adventure #boat #boatlife #camping #bluebells #summer

This is Lady J, our cinderella boat. She's a work in progress the whole time, but I just thought that ahead of our trip this weekend that's been pushed back and pushed back, I'd show you the progress we'd made so far. I didn't take enough pics but this will give an impression at least. As you can see from the first few pics, she was a dirty, neglected, uncomfortable fishing boat before we got her. Covered in rust stains and dirt, especially up where she had a cupboard in her bow (you can see pretty clearly where it was), she was purely utilitarian and not very well looked after. We started with simple things. We stripped her bare. Got that awful cupboard out, as well as her ugly old steel flooring on the outside deck, which isn't pictured, and got to work. We widened her windows, installed a removable centre plank to support a bed, bought some surprisingly comfy (for the price) reconstituted foam, and made back rests, cushions and a nice wood effect floor from lino offcuts 😁 Out the back we installed big storage bin/seats, a hefty wooden deck, and some kitchen barstools our landlord happened to be throwing out just as we were looking to buy some. We also fitted her with some poles to support our fancy, uv protective, see through red roof and green siding, all made out of welding curtain! (my man is a welder so these were free). She's still not finished-finished, but she's getting close, and I'll be able to take some better pics when we take her out, I know her laid up in the driveway isn't that exciting, but I thought it would be nice to get everyone properly acquainted with her story first 😁 Happy Bealtaine to all and hope you're all as excited for summer as I am!!! Sorry I've been gone for a while - weather was terrible been sitting inside doing fuck-all. Brightening up now though, it's actually super hot today but because everything was soaked its this really hazy, dead, humid, swampy-ass heat. It's supposed to be nice for a few days now though which is good, and I've been out in the boat washing the winter off it with my homemade cleanser and getting it all ship shape for a trip soon 😁 so hopefully I can offer something more than this same view from my garden you've seen four or five times now in different weather 😂 Full moon tonight! Will be doing some maintenance work, strengthening my wards and charging what needs charging 😁 seems like the summer is just ready to come bursting through and I cannot wait 💗 #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #irishwitch #druid #druidry #nature #outdoors #irish #ireland #landscape #summeriscoming

I just thought this haphazard pile of notebooks, cards, and my oils and knitting really reflected on where in my life I am now. I spent a long time being a very lazy witch - I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I started learning so young at age 11 and had to teach myself - I knew my basics and cast a few spells and had lots of plans for things, but when my teenage years really hit I took a big break from about 17 - 21 or 2 where I was all caught up with social life things. As a young adult I lived in a tiny flat and all of my craft gear was buried in my tiny bookshelf, and I barely had enough room to turn around let alone set up a circle - I probably could have done more than I did, but I didn't, and that wasted time is something I will never get back, so now I always have several projects on the go at once as a form of compensation - gotta catch up! Without going on a rant about cities which is probably a post for another time - now that I have moved out to the countryside I actually have the time and space to really enjoy my practice, instead of constantly searching for space, and feeling the weight of everyone else in the region's emotional baggage sitting over us all like a dark cloud. I now have an entire room of my place filled with craft projects, and another entirely for a library/meditation/ritual space, and I can leave some projects sitting around in my line of sight, where I will pick them up and work on them, and they actually just look nice when left out, instead of taking up half of my limited space and being yet another drag on my energy. This house came to me thanks to a spell - and it is beyond perfect (except that it's rented - so we'll have to leave someday 😢). Pay attention to your environment, both your home and the setting around it. Is it serving you? Could you be better off somewhere else? It might be frightening or seem impossible to move, but that is what the magic is for 😉 you might need to make sacrifices - take a lower paying job or give up some social life for example - but your priority should be your mental, physical and emotional health - none of which cities help - the opposite in fact.

Mould prewash for clothes! So I did actually clean out all my clothes like I said I would in my morning rituals post, and I found that some of them had been in such deep storage they had started to get mouldy. Mould is a pretty common problem in Ireland because its so damn damp all the time. I recently bought a little tower of drawers so that the clothes I keep for craft projects don't stay in one big pile and this doesn't happen any more, but in the meantime, to get rid of the mould, I used this potion and the soak setting on my washing machine; White vinegar Clove oil Tea tree oil Rosemary oil Clary sage oil Frankincense oil Put it in a jar, shake shake shake and pour it on top of the clothes before putting the soak setting on, then wash, spin and dry as normal. The smell of the essential oils tends to stick around a little even after the wash but the vinegar smell goes, and while the cycle is on you can definitely smell the oils in the room which is nice 😸 #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #druid #druidry #potions #crafting #mouldsolution #homeremedy

Mornings... I've read and been told ever since I started studying witchcraft that a morning routine is very helpful and important, to ground yourself and get into the swing of the day properly. I'm currently trying my very, very best to keep up with one. I'm off work with a bad shoulder, so my sleep schedule is absolutely bonkers. Left to my own devices I usually become nocturnal - but that causes depression to start to creep in before long, especially if you miss days with nice weather. So I wrote myself out a schedule - I'm *crap* at following schedules - Get up, dressed properly - not pyjamas - and tidied (hair etc). Make a cup of tea with an intention in it - my cup today is set to help me get the best possible use out of the day. Five minutes meditation (goes up to ten after a couple of days). Twenty Minutes exercise - I'm going to be using my rowing machine.. Complete one task from the list of tasks on my list board - today's is to sort out all the clothes in the house and tidy my various storage places for them, and swap out winter clothes for spring and summer ones. I'm going to try and do this all week at the very least and probably next week as well. I realise it's already Tuesday and here in Ireland its 1pm - but I'm doing my best 😂 if anyone wants to join me for the rest of the week and share your successes and failures that could be great motivation 😁 Sometimes self-care means hard work. I like a bubble bath or a pedicure as much as anyone else but when you're slipping into a laziness-induced slump and edging towards depression, you've got to get your blood running and put some structure on yourself sometimes. #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #druid #druidry #nature #outdoors #mornings #routine #morningroutine #tea #exercise #meditation #selfcare

Party on, tiny Hawthorn trees! (read more below!) Hawthorn is one of, if not the most faery-associated trees in the general Irish mythology. When they grow alone in fields, they are left alone. At sacred sites such as Tara, particular trees are adorned with offerings - ribbons, beads, generally whatever is in people's pockets at the time. Dotted across the landscape are rings of hawthorns planted on a low bank - these are known as "ring forts" and are generally considered to be the remnants of dwellings by archaeologists, and sacred to the faeries or Sióga (shee-oh-ga, all run together) to the locals. Many people still take the Sióga and their sacred hawthorn trees very seriously. The workers building the De Lorean car factory - which was based in Belfast would you believe - were consistently convinced that most of the problems the company suffered could be attributed to the sacred tree that had been cut down to build the factory. This was taken so seriously by management that they brought in a similar tree and planted it in a ceremony - although the damage seemed to have been done. Another story that the farmer boys at school told me was of a man who took it upon himself to chop down the hawthorns around a ring fort on his land one day. With the first swipe of his chainsaw the machine went through a single branch and then slipped - and took his arm off as well. Mind you, this story came from the driest, most stoic set of farmers you could ever hope to meet, and they were dead serious - and these are by far not the only stories of their kind, many very graphic and enough of a deterrent for many of the most skeptical. Due to its blossoming in May it is associated with the summer, with romance and beauty - and a great protective tree due to its thorns. If you wish to use it, ask politely and LISTEN to the answer. The Sióga are not to be messed with. #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #nature #outdoors #faery #fae #fairies #fairy #faeries #sióga #ireland #irish #druid #druidry #hawthorn #mythology

Some pictures from Clonmacnoise, an old monastery site south of Athlone along the Shannon River. It was as far as we got on our trip down the Shannon in our little boat before we had to turn back - we'd been waylaid for a day and a half at Safe Harbour after battling our way across a shockingly rough Lough Ree (see my previous pic of the entrance to Rindoon castle for the story), and we only had a week to get as far as we could, however this was a fantastic place to finish up. The pagan and the goth in me just adores abandoned monastery aesthetics 😝 with round towers to escape to when the Vikings came up the river, this site from the 10th century is considered by some to be Ireland's first city, and our first university. High Kings are buried here, and even for faithless heathens like myself it's clearly a gorgeous place to visit. #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #druid #druidry #monastery #ancient #history #historic #ruins #atmospheric #outdoors #ireland #irish #spooky #witchy

Reformed some leftover wax into new candles today 😸 I meant to take pics of the whole process but it's fairly self-explanatory. Water in pot, bowl in water, wax in bowl, essential oils on wax, make hot happen, pour, leave alone. The only slightly awkward thing is finding a wick but if you have any old cotton jeans lying around, just cut a really thin strip off, twist it into a cord, dip it in wax and hold it straight for a few seconds to set it. I used the metal things from tealight wicks and pencils to hold mine in place, which you can see in the pics. It really is a fun day-project to do, and I ended up with all new special custom candles 😸 the orange one is Citronella, Patchouli and Eucalyptus, but the citronella is pretty overpowering. I only put it in because the candle is for keeping bugs away from the boat/tent on adventures so I'm ok with it. The purple one is for earthy tones and increasing my personal power, it's Bergamot, Black Pepper, Frankincense and Clary Sage, and the green one is for money, and made with my own money oil mix with magnets, Cinnamon, Ginger, Clove, Bergamot and Patchouli. I was a tiny bit disappointed with the quantity of some of the wax, I was using up my coloured leftovers and topping them up with white wax tealight remnants, so I will probably either melt the green & purple down and add more wax to them, or I'll make two-tone candles, haven't quite decided yet. #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #druid #druidry #candles #spells #crafting #upcycling #essentialoils #homeremedy

100 Followers!!! Thank you all so much 😸 I avoided Instagram for years because Facebook was already enough of a pain in the arse, but to be honest I am having a ball on here. It's so easy to meet fellow witchy folk and expand your friend group, and I really have met and/or followed some fantastic people and am very much enjoying where this whole thing is going. I've uploaded this pic before, it was my first post before I understood how to not make it square or how to use filters properly, so I decided to upload it again in all it's glory. Dunno how easy it is to tell, but this was the view out of the back of our boat on an incredibly still night last summer. We were even able to have bare tea lights out - there wasn't even enough of a breeze to make them flicker. Visited Belvedere House and Gardens today, which dates back to the 1700s and encompasses a gorgeous manor house, a beautiful big folly (that big ruin-looking thing) that was built to block the owner's view of his brothers house, walled gardens, a fairy garden, and a statue of a bear who lived there for a long time and was by all accounts the goodest boy. His name was Agu, the Kazak word for bear, and the man who brought him back from his travels, Col. Charles Howard-Bury who owned the estate at the time, used to wrestle with him - even when he grew to seven feet tall - and if the information sign is anything to go by it sounds like he had a great life. I loved this place, especially the fairy garden and Agu, and will definitely be revisiting. I took too many pictures to post but hopefully these create a good impression - we didn't even get around to it all, but I like that because it means we get to come back some day. #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #nature #outdoors #history #historic #manorhouse #ireland #irish #bear

So there are tons of great tips out there already but I just wanted to add some that I've thought of through actually practicing it, some of the very practical challenges you can come across. Salt circles are a common practice - first thing is something people probably know already, but don't use salt for a circle outside because it damages plant life, so use cascarilla powder (crushed roasted eggshells), a crystal grid, candles or simply your own energy outdoors. Indoors, I recommend that you sweep it up basically immediately after finishing up, or it will begin absorbing any ambient moisture and start to cake up and becomes a nightmare to get rid of compared to when it's still crystallised. Second, if you use charcoal blocks but not too often, they can also absorb moisture and become hard to light, and will often spit out sparks and hot embers, which can burn holes in altar cloths and ritual clothing, and they smoke and hiss which is noisy and can be distracting in a ritual setting. I recommend that you store charcoal blocks in a small resealable container like a tupperware, maybe even with a moisture packet. Thirdly is a faitly commonly known one as well but worth including just in case, tea lights don't burn well unless you burn them all in one go. They leave a lot of waste at the end and burn out quickly after being relit. If you have to use a candle for multiple purposes, I recommend pillar, dinner or chime candles instead, especially for something like the four quarters, where you'll be using them for the same purpose each time. If you need to change their purpose, carve anything you're carving into them at the very top so it burns away, and then clear and re-dedicate/anoint them and carve your new symbols at the top again. #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #druid #druidry #witchy #spell #spells #spellcraft

I thought I'd share some passages from one of my favourite second-hand bookshop finds ever - the Book of the Flower Fairies by Cicely M. Barker. Now, it's not by any means a guide to actual faeries - it's mostly a children's book, but it's full of little nuggets of useful information about most of the flowers that bloom here, as Ireland and England have very similar ecosystems. I have found it useful for getting to know the flowers and plants better, and I will definitely be reading this to my kids, when I have them 😝 it's also just a lovely thing to have around. I highly recommend second hand bookshops, especially in old places - I got this at the Hill of Tara - for witchy books, that might not even know they're witchy 😁 #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #druid #druidry #book #vintage #secondhand #fairies #faeries #flowers #herbs #herbalism #forage #spring #ostara

Cats! This is my entire troop, clockwise from left around in a sort of a fibonacci spiral; Panda (after red pandas, she is doofy af can't wait to show you some videos), Figaro my big baby, Boon, the original, and Ziggy my little punk rock princess. Cats are amazing for the occult. I've explained before why I don't think it's a great idea to designate a living animal as a familiar (familiars absorb magical hits that can kill them), but cats really are great for magical practice in lots of ways. They are very sensitive to energy. If you're too tense and/or high frequency, they generally won't want to be around you. To develop a real connection with a cat can take a lot of time, grounding, centering and respect-building, and even then sometimes it doesn't make a difference - some cats are assholes 😂 but even if they don't react, they can be a powerful motivation to make yourself more attractive, energy-wise. I believe you get the cats you deserve, especially when they find you, which is how most people get cats to be fair. Even asshole cats are great for practicing energy manipulation - a cat will react quite a bit to a properly thrown psi-ball for instance. It doesn't do them any physical harm, and it's quite funny to see, to be fair. Obviously you'd have to be a complete psychopath to practice something harmful on them so don't do that, you crazy person, but psi balls are good fun and you can use them to stop cats from jumping on surfaces or otherwise doing bold things they shouldn't be doing 😂 Cats also see things we can't see without a lot of practice or a natural gift. I had a cat once who wouldn't go into my old room, which had an awful, gloomy energy and in which I had a very spooky experience so it was almost definitely haunted. Cats are your spiritual canary-in-a-coalmine; if your cat is comfy, the energy is good. If you get a feeling your cat is disturbed, or if its staring at a blank piece of air and seems agitated, go grab the sage. #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #druid #druidry #cats #witchescat #energymanipulation #spirits #familiar

Some fresh pictures of some of the more hidden beauty of Ireland because I'm still feeling all patriotic and I have a bit of whiskey in me now so why not. The Cavan Burren Park is tucked away in the mountains of West Cavan, a relatively unknown site very near the Shannon Pot - the traditional source of our longest river. It is both limestone plateau and glacial landscape full of erratics dropped as the ice sheet retreated, leaving a surreal landscape of wild trees and massive, glittering bluish granite boulders poking out from the moss that covers everything like a living carpet. It is also clear to all who visit that it is a highly charged place of incredible significance to the ancients, as it is veritably strewn with tombs and impossibly-balanced altars - and the presence of the Fae is unmistakable - it is covered in edible berries at the right times of year (bilberries, raspberries, wild strawberries), and I've found a kind of tiny white bumblebee there that I've never spotted any where else, and have dubbed "faery bees". This is by far and away my favourite place in the whole world, you could visit every day for a year and see something new each time - and barely anyone knows it exists, which is absolutely fine by me :D although I would like more pagans to find it - it deserves to be appreciated. #witch #witchcraft #occult #pagan #paganism #tradwitch #tradwitchcraft #traditionalwitchcraft #nature #atmospheric #outdoors #ireland #spooky #glacial #ancient #sacrifice #druid #druidry #paddysday #stpatricksday #irish #forest #gorgeous #moss #tomb #archaology #prehistory #prehistoric #whiskey
