During an immunology course as part of her doctoral training, Ayano Kohlgruber discovered the creative aspects of the scientific process by solving biological puzzles with her classmates.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “Imm204 made me realize two important things that would affect my decision-making going forward in graduate school. The first was that it made me consider the type of training environment I would benefit most from for my graduate work. Imm204 taught me that that the people you surround yourself with can critically elevate the quality of the science….⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Secondly, Imm204 made me realize how much I still had to learn about how to think about science. Imm204 was the first time that scientific papers were presented to me in the form of a puzzle. I was forced to approach the data using new strategies, which broadened my conventional methods to reason through immunological problems. I was fascinated by the way the data, without any words, told a story, but it was up to us, as scientists, to communicate that story in its most honest form.”⁣ ⁣ #HarvardMed

Pamela Chen has been painting since she was a child. Now a third-year student at HMS, two of her self-portraits are on display in the offices of Dean George Q. Daley. The first depicts Chen donning her white coat, a symbol of her entry into the medical profession. The second illustrates Chen’s interpretation of her clinical experience. Together, the paintings reflect the energy and evolution of the medical school experience. #HarvardMed #internationalwomensday

Using an innovative 3D imaging technique, which combines expansive miscroscopy and lattice light sheet microscopy, researchers can trace and classify neurons across an entire fruit fly brain. Individual neurons in the right hemisphere (colored) are shown in relation to surrounding dopaminergic neurons (white), and traced to the neurons in different regions of the central complex. #HarvardMed #microscopy

New Advanced Integrated Science Courses at HMS are changing the way faculty are integrating basic-science teaching with clinical care. The eight new courses are team taught by faculty drawn from HMS basic science departments and HMS-affiliated hospitals, and designed to help students evaluate new research advances and incorporate them into their clinical decision making as physicians. Shown here, an immunology course is co-taught by Stephanie Dougan, assistant professor of microbiology and immunobiology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and her husband Michael Dougan, an instructor in medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. #HarvardMed

For nearly a century, students who come to HMS have lived in Vanderbilt Hall. Although the residents come and go, the rituals of student life abide. The daily mailbox check is one such ritual. And how better to see if something awaits than by peering through the tiny window of the mailbox, assisted by a flashlight app on a mobile phone? #HarvardMed

Sarcomeres beat in human heart cells in a lab dish. The cells were made by turning back the developmental clock on adult skin cells and reprogramming them to become heart muscle cells. HMS researchers have developed a new tool that allows them to study changes in sarcomere composition, beat rate and multiple contraction and relaxation properties caused by various diseases. #HarvardMed

The HMS Dean’s Report asked students “What was your most formative or memorable experience in your medical education at HMS?” ⁣ ⁣ Having grown up in Zimbabwe during the HIV epidemic, Rumbidzai Mushavi reflects on the fact that the quality of available medical care is often socioeconomically, politically and geographically determined.⁣ ⁣ “I thought about the fact that my patient and her husband were physicians, trained in the same principles of modern medicine as any of the physicians that were handling their care. However, because of various social, political and economic forces, they couldn’t reasonably expect that their daughter would receive the lifesaving surgery she needed back in their home country—surgery they knew was within reach elsewhere.⁣ ⁣ I reflected on myself; on the fact that as a medical student from Zimbabwe training at some of the best medical institutions in the world, I was learning to deliver a gold standard of care that was unavailable to many of my fellow countrymen and women back home. Indeed, the kind of level of care I was learning to deliver was often inaccessible to members of my own family.”⁣ ⁣ #HarvardMed #womeninscience

Liberian physician Elsie Karmbor-Ballah is working to reduce maternal mortality in her country. As part of the HMS two-year Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery program, she completed a mentored research project to understand maternal mortality in Liberia. Now back home, Karmbor-Ballah hopes to use this knowledge and training to implement real change. “Improving transportation for health services, hiring and training more doctors and nurses, retraining traditional midwives as community health workers, and improving access to supplies would help save lives,” she says. #HarvardMed #WomenInScience
