The low low tide of the #kingtidesat Asilomar State Beach. 📷 @hiimjoe88 🌊 The "king tides" occur when the sun and moon are aligned in their gravitational pull and at their closest ("perihelion" and "perigee" respectively) to Earth. When the sun and moon pull on the ocean together, you have what’s known as a “spring tide,” which have the greatest difference between high and low tide. When the sun and moon are at right angles in their tugging on the Earth, their effects dampen the other, and you have the “neap tides.” The tides are like a global wave, with two troughs and two crests, circling the planet while the celestial dance of sun and moon shrink and stretch the tidal flow to the rhythm of the skies. . #montereybayaquarium #cakingtides #howlowcanyougo #highestwatermark #deepbetweenpacifictides

Weekends are for vegging out—or if you’re a ribboned pipehorse, all the other days too. Leaflike projections and patchy patterns change the channel on binging predators and watchful prey. So while the ribboned pipehorse may be putting on a show, few know where to tune in. #montereybayaquarium #leafmealone #missingthepipehorseforthetrees #branchmanager

The sea can do craziness, it can do smooth, it can lie down like silk breathing or toss havoc shoreward; it can give ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ gifts and withhold all; it can rise, ebb, froth like an incoming frenzy of fountains, or it can sweet-talk entirely. It's been a chilly, rainy day here in Monterey, so we're warming up by the fire of this orange cup coral—a cup coral of hot cococean to warm the sole, if you whale. Orange cup corals are ubiquitous bonfires of stinging beauty on the reefs of Monterey Bay. The “bumps” on their tentacles are stinging cells called cnidocytes. These specialized cells are equipped with stinging harpoons called nematocysts, a key feature of the cnidarian phylum that includes anemones, hard corals and jellyfish. At certain stages in their lifecycle, cup corals are so small that they pass through our filters, making them some of the first animals to settle in our exhibits when they first opened! #montereybayaquarium #orangecupcoralyougladtohavereadthepost?

Just popping up to wish you a whaley wonderful week! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The southbound gray whale migration is nearing its peak, with our naturalists spotting them off the back deck of the Aquarium almost daily. Their 10,000-mile roundtrip journey began in their feeding grounds near Alaska a few months ago and will take them to the safety of shallow lagoons in Baja California, Mexico to breed and give birth. Good luck, whales—you’re doing gray-t! #montereybayaquarium #graywhale #haveagraytday #whalewebeseaingyousoon?

Sea stars dance to their own rhythm: This one is called “The Ambulacral Groove.” Sea stars amble about with hundreds of tiny tube feet—lovely hydraulically powered limbs unique to echinoderms, which include sea urchins and sea cucumbers. Often equipped with sticky mucus and small suction cups, tube feet make sea stars highly ambulatory. Sea stars have five V-shaped channels for their tube feet to take a hike. These ambulacral grooves are named after the Latin “ambulacrum”, meaning a walk planted with trees. The term has even deeper roots in the Indo-European “ambhi”, meaning “around.” Of course, having your bare feetsies exposed to the seafloor can be a tad touchy—fortunately, the ambulacral grooves are protected by spines, ossicles and pincers that can close off the tube feet from the rest of the world if things get socked in. Tube feet are groovy, to say the least. And if you thought a two-step was tough, try a few hundred more! #montereybayaquarium #seaingstars #ambulacroix #echinodermatologistapproved
