to exercise -

I’m joining forces with @oldnavyto share my tips and tricks for getting in the mood to exercise - ESPECIALLY on the days when exercise is the absolute LAST thing you want to do! My biggest tip is to remember that working out is meant to be fun- it’s not supposed to be stressful! Sometimes we put so much emotional pressure on ourselves that it strips away the joy of moving our bodies. Exercise grants us freedom and ignites our inner child- have fun, ignore the haters, and get into the magic of enjoying your body! It also helps if you have a dope outfit to get you in the groove. I’m loving this coordinating set- the sparkly top is adorable! Shop this look (and so many others) at @oldnavy! #ad #oldnavystyle #hifive Photo by @justincookphoto

I think I’m the first fat person on the cover of @yogajournal. A black fatty who doesn’t hate themselves on the cover of one of the whitest magazines in history. Well I’ll be damned. What does that really mean, though? What should I take from that? I’m excited. Don’t get me wrong. I’m very happy about all of this. But what does it mean for me to strive for the approval of white supremacist institutions? What does that say about who I am? About who this world has trained me to be? In my happiness I see my desire to be seen in the light of whiteness. To be accepted by those who oppress me. To receive a mark of approval from those who will never respect me. When will I learn that the mark of approval is unnecessary? When will I learn that I need not tap dance for the enjoyment of white audiences? When will I learn that my blackness is not for sale? When will I learn that my self-approval is not on the auction block? I’m happy. But I’m critical. Because I’m practicing. And practicing is more than just poses. When we do the actual work of #yoga, nasty shit comes up. Don’t run from it- this is the actual work. We all have a role to play and we must all accept our responsibility. Everything else is just make believe. I’m on the February 2019 cover of @yogajournaland it’s in stores now. If you buy it, send me a picture- I wanna scrapbook it for my great-great nieces and shit. #representationmatters Photo by my love @cdo.photo EDIT- Wow. The comments on this post are a fascinating observation on the conversation about race in our world. Wow.

@Qapital has inspired me to revamp my entire approach to financial wellness... Features like Payday Divvy, Money Missions, the Spending Sweet Spot, and Invest have made me look at my current finances with a judgment-free gaze while treating my long-term savings as realistic goals that are completely within my reach. Financial well-being is directly linked to overall wellness and changing the way I think about money is the key. I’m one of the most jaded people ever but this @oldnavycampaign featuring me, @noelledowning, & @katiehwillcox actually managed to charm my inner Daria Morgendorfer*. When brands ask how to provide better representation in the curvy fitness arena, I always say “LITERALLY FAT GIRLS JUST WANT TO GO TO THE SAME STORES AS OUR THIN FRIENDS AND GET THE EXACT SAME CLOTHES THAT’S IT NO ADJUSTMENTS THE EXACT SAME THING. STOP PULLING THAT ‘FAT GIRLS ONLY WANT POTATO SACKS’ DISCRIMINATORY MESS SO WE CAN ALL HAVE FUN, OK.” IMHO the representation shown in this gif is the standard that all fitness brands should seek. Nothing more, nothing less. To be fair, @oldnavy has long since been a spot for finding curvy athletic wear- time for everyone else to catch-up. I’ll have much more to show from this new collection in the coming weeks and you can see more RIGHT NOW on @oldnavy’s IG but I couldn’t help posting this one because it so clearly exhibits what I can only hope is the beginning of a major shift in the fitness industry. *What am I saying? I’m way more of a Jane. #daria

Lemme tell you a story of a Fat Girl who lost ~50 pounds from a combo of obsessively practicing advanced yoga postures, working in a hot+sweaty restaurant, drinking alcohol constantly, and skipping major meals. That same Fat Girl has changed big parts of her life- she stopped drinking all the time, stopped skipping major meals, started meditating more than obsessively practicing yoga postures, and exchanged her work in a hot + sweaty restaurant for a career that requires constant travel/emotional upheaval. That Fat Girl regained the weight she lost and, even though her life felt much more fulfilling, she still found herself wanting to feel more physically + nutritionally fit. So in the year of our lord 2018, that Fat Girl decided to focus on finding a new definition of healthy. She started lifting weights and intentionally practicing cardio + strength training. She learned about wheat belly and the benefits of veganism. She fell in love with @glutinofoods and @beyondmeat. She began juicing regularly and even made a @qapital savings goal specifically for the purpose of buying a masticating juicer. She slept more and drank lots of water every day and while she didn’t lose a lot of weight she felt much more balanced. She learned to love and honor her Fat identity, and in turn learned to love and honor her most true self. But at the same time that she was redefining wellness and nutrition for herself, that Fat Girl had to deal with a constant stream of well-intentioned nosy internet assholes who felt compelled to make assumptions about her health. She was not sure why these strangers felt they had the right to comment on her wellbeing- perhaps they were reflecting their own conditioned self-hatred on to her? Stop commenting on the lifestyles of people you don’t know. You are judging on the basis of internet curation and you look stupid as a result. The people you choose to judge are just as complicated as you. Instead of judging someone else, focus on moisturizing your spirit and minding your own business. Because, if we’re making judgements, your spirit looks ashy as fuck from this angle. Prince @justincookphototook this picture #fbf #wellnessmyway
