Source to Sea - 1/15 || One hundred fifty years ago yesterday, John Wesley Powell – scientist, explorer, and Union Civil War veteran (he lost his right arm at the Battle of Shiloh) – launched his wooden boat from Green River Station, Wyoming Territory in what would be the first scientific study and expedition down the Green and Colorado rivers. Powell and his men would travel for three months downriver to the confluence of the Colorado and Virgin rivers in present-day Nevada. Today, the Upper Green, the first leg of their journey, is a lazy river known for fishing. I’ll be following this historic journey with my photos from my source to sea work over the next few months. “Standing on a high point, I can look off in every direction over a vast landscape, with salient rocks and cliffs glittering in the evening sun. Dark shadows are settling in the valleys and gulches, and the heights are made higher and the depths deeper by the glamour and witchery of light and shade.” – Powell’s journal entry, May 24, 1869, Green River #water #rivers #adventure #coloradoriver 📷 @pedromcbride #petemcbride @americanrivers

Finding a Line: Years ago I documented the Sherpa who bravely build the route so others can make their attempt to climb Mt. Everest. They are the unsung heroes, the frequently unnoticed gurus that enable others to summit. I spent weeks chasing these men dubbed the “Ice Doctors" through the Khumbu Icefall above 18,000 ft amidst its creaks and moans and collapsing seracs, marveling at their engineering skills, ability to read the mountain and their Herculean fitness (zoom to see one). As Everest season is in full swing, I’m thinking of them and my friends @coryrichards (happy bday bud) who is attempting a new line on the north and veterans @mountainworld and @davidcmorton documenting the mountain’s climbing history - and wishing safe passage. #everest #himalayas #mountains #watertowers #nature 📷 #petemcbride 2nd shot - view down valley from the icefall.

Home Hill: I’ve climbed and skied this Rocky Mountain 13teener every spring with my brother and friends (pawed included) for roughly three decades. One of our friends sadly passed on this hill so now we continue the tradition in memory, hollering his name Laaathe in celebration of life -- and sorrow for our departed pal. #friendship #brothers #colorado #wilderness #skiing #dogs #nature

To all the mothers and matriarchs out there, including the largest, Mama Earth, Happy Mother’s Day. Thanks for taking care of us. We can do better. To my personal mom, thanks for showing me the world of creativity, high energy and empathy you exude daily. Big love. The dance of blue hour falls over man-made and natural forms, casting a glow on the flow of tourists leaving Monument Valley at the end of the day. Tourism offers economic opportunity to many that live near and amidst landscapes like this, but it can also bring the risk of loving places to death. Tune in to @cbseveningnews tonight 6:30 ET to hear me and @kevinfedarkoauthor talk with @jeffglor about the challenges of conservation and access in our revered landscapes. My film #intothegrandcanyon, is now streaming on Hulu and my book (check profile link) look at this tricky issue. #intothecanyon #betweenriverandrimbook #monumentvalley #longexposure #sonyalpha 📷 by #petemcbride

Rio Grande: My friend @bencmasters recently spent 3 months traveling the US-Mexico border on bikes, horses, and canoes to document the borderlands before further construction of a wall. He just released the film @theriverandthewall which takes us on the journey to see the landscapes carved by the Rio Grande and to meet the people that live there. They interviewed wildlife biologists, border patrol agents, immigrants, landowners, and politicians to show the reality of the border and how a physical wall would affect the wildlife and public lands along the Rio Grande. The film is beautiful, funny, heart-wrenching, informative, and opened my eyes to the beauty and diversity of the region. These are a few photos from their journey. Check out Ben’s film streaming now on iTunes. #theriverandthewall #riogrande #wildlife

Roots of a River: 5 years ago I paddled the Colorado River to the Sea of Cortez. It was a remarkable journey because the river no longer reaches the sea thanks to our network of thirsty straws upstream. But in 2014, a binational agreement released a slug of water, less than 1% of the river’s annual flow, in an effort to restore parts of the Colorado River's delta estuary. Our paddling team rode that pulse and witnessed the river kiss the ocean once again (briefly). Sadly we were last to do so because the river is once again dry. But yesterday, I returned to visit one of the restoration sites where a small base flow of water has turned a section of arid wasteland back into a forest of native vegetation. It gave me hope how resilient nature can be if we give it a hand and let it do its thing. Thanks to the @theredfordcenter for the amazing journey with a remarkable crew of river #stewards #hope #Coloradoriver #raisetheriver For those in the Bay Area, you can see my film “Into the Canyon” tomorrow at #Doclands in San Rafael at 12 noon which focuses on our public lands and water. #intothecanyon

This mile deep abyss has connected me to strangers, friends and family — from tribes of teachers to gurus of place. In short: it is a remarkably rich community of the canyon. This weekend I reconnected with many at @5pointfilmfestival and felt touched to see once again how the power of story can inspire us.
