Lamium amplexicaule is one of the few plants flowering right now. I'm TAing Plant Structure and Function starting this week, so I'll be posting microscopy images in the absence of winter flora.

Mother-of-thousands is taking over a corner of the greenhouse. In the 3rd photo, you can see the plant babies that readily pop off the leaf margins. There really are thousands of them! (Bryophyllum sp.)

Sphaeralcea is the only native plant I can find flowering right now. I'm feeling a little deprived. Only a couple more months of dormancy!

These little red cups are called extrafloral nectaries. You can see them as red dots along the main vein of the leaf in the 3rd photo. These nectaries provide sugars for ants, and the ants in turn provide protection from herbivorous insects. The ants also viciously attack me when I water the Leucaena in my lab's greenhouse. (Leucaena esculenta)

I'm starting to amass enough photos to run my own morphometric analysis on #lamiaceaecorollas. Here are a few animations I've made. Unfortunately my early practices weren't standardized, so I have to do many of these over again. They still look kinda cool though. In order: 1. Plectranthus verticillatus 2. Salvia pinguifolia 3. Stachys coccinea

The smallest rattlesnake I've ever seen! @claraross4747 found this little western diamondback when she was ahead of me on the 'A' Mountain trail. Maybe a foot and a half long?

I'm jealous of all the fungal photos coming from all you PNWerners. This is about the most interesting fungus in my neck of the woods... I miss Fall in Oregon!
