This wee thing is called a testate amoeba. It’s a single cellular organism and an expert builder. The cell is living inside a house that the amoeba built from materials it collected. That house is called a test, hence the name testate amoeba. You can see the amoeba’s pseudopodium sticking out the front, that’s the transparent amorphous thing that pulls the cell along. The pseudopodium is use to move and to eat, and the amoeba keeps the rest of its cell nestled inside its test, safe as houses. This is some kind of Heliozoan, at least I think it is. Sometimes heliozoan’s come complete with a coating of spherical scales over their cell body. Protrusions called axopodia stick out in between the scales and are used for movement and catching prey. That might be why this one looks like a collection of balls all stuck together, because of the silica scales, but honestly, I’m not sure. A bacterial filament traversing the screen. This is a colony of individuals that live together inside a sheath. The whole colony is able to live by turning like a corkscrew. First up from the marina is this wee thingamajig. This is a motile (it moves) single celled green algae probably from the genus chlamydomonas. . If you scroll back to a few of my posts ago you can see Volvox, which is a motile multicellular green algae. Chlamydomonas and Volvox are related. Each Volvox cell is incredibly similar to this single Chlamydomonas cell. The difference is that the Volovox cells stick together in colonies rather than living solo like this chlamydomonas. Variety. I’ve now got these Volvox colonies growing in culture in the lab. I’m hoping to capture aspects of their life cycle on video, as these are special colonies indeed. . Colonies are groups of individuals that live together. In Volvox the individuals are all single cells. We are also groups of cells that live together, but we are considered multicellular rather than a colony. This is because our cells show differentiation of function: some of them are muscle cells, others liver cell, or brain cell, or sex cells like sperm and eggs, and none of these groups of cells could survive on their own without the others. . In the microscopic world many colonies are made up of many identical individuals. But Volvox also show some cellular differentiation. Some of the cells are somatic (only involved in growth, structure and photosynthesis) while others are reproductive (will go on to produce the next generation). You can see the next generation forming from the reproductive cells: those darker green blobs inside each Volvox is a new colony slowly growing. Once formed the old mother colony will break open and release the new colonies into the pond. . One of the most exciting things I saw through the microscope this year was this bloom of Volvox that was growing in the Ridgewood Reservoir a few months ago. . Volvox is a colony of green algae. Each one is made up of many individual cells linked together by fine mucilage threads. . Each individual cell in the colony has a pair of flagella, and by beating them together the colony can move. I think they look like green snowballs tumbling through the the water.
