roofusandkilo's Media: Roo update: I apologize this took so long but I was waiting to do an update until I got the biopsy

Roo update: I apologize this took so long but I was waiting to do an update until I got the biopsy results back, which finally came in this morning. Roofus has advanced stage osteo sarcoma, bone cancer, in his back. It has already metastasized throughout his body which was what the tumor they removed last week was. We cannot do anything to treat it further which leaves him with a very limited amount of time left with us, likely a few months. We obviously are very sad but in a way I am extremely grateful as well. Not only for having him in our lives and the way he has changed our entire world completely, but for this process as well. So often we lose the ones we love suddenly and are left with thoughts of what we could have done differently and regrets of not being able to say goodbye. I feel blessed that we have the comfort of knowing we have done everything we possibly could, that his pain is lessened by the tumor removal, and now we just get to spend every day we have left celebrating and loving him. This all hurts me most as a mother, seeing my son and Roo go through this. But I love that his best friend was a pit bull from the streets of East Oakland that he rescued. That they were able to grow up together, go through the dark stuff together, and come out the other side strong. That their bond is unbreakable and their love is forever. We would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Tomorrow is Miles' birthday (my son) and we will all be here together. That the very best and most important gift given to us every day. Thank you all for the immense amount of love you have shown us. I read every comment and wish I could respond but just please know it doesn't go unnoticed. I have so much love for this community and feel it in return always - it's incredibly special and means everything. Hug your pups tight, tell your family you love them, and spread kindness if you can ❤️ - C #rescuefamily

I’m so sorry. ♥️

Ok this is going to be so jumbled but I just have to get this out. Today Roo went in for a biopsy on his inoperable tumor (the 3rd and most invasive one after 2 failed attempts) so we could learn what cancer we were dealing with. They had only one spot available for surgery this week so I had to bring him in right away, totally unprepared. He was there all day and by 6pm with no update I was getting worried. You guys. The doctor called. THEY REMOVED THE TUMOR to 5% of its size!! The one that has caused him so much pain, took away his ability to walk, made it so difficult to go to the bathroom - nothing but a speck. He said he was in there to get the biopsy and thought he might be able to get some of the 5 cm mass out so he went for it. And now it is almost completely gone. He will still need chemo and has another small mass that will need to be removed but this is a MIRACLE. An absolute, 100% miracle. Going from having my heart shattered listening to his cries, giving him meds around the clock to now knowing tomorrow he won't be in pain - I cannot even see to type. I am crying so hard. Without the first 2 failed attempts would we have tried this? Today of all the days, with a vet we've never seen? With the amazing @livelikeroofoundationstepping in to cover it. Without them - I don't even know. I'm mind blown, humbled, at a complete loss. I KNOW you all did this. I just know in my heart all of us coming together did this. I wish I had written something more beautiful or meaningful but I just had to tell you all. We pick him up tomorrow morning. We are so so so grateful. We are so relieved. I am a mess. I love you guys with my whole entire heart and will live the rest of my days helping animals. Thank you. Will post when we get him tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!! 🙏🙌✨🎉🎊❤️❤️❤️ #rescuefamily

Roo update: We still do not know which cancer we are working with. Between the two possibilities, one can be treated and benefit from chemo and the other would just make him sick. First we did a fine needle aspirate which confirmed cancer, then we did a simple biopsy last week. Got those results this morning - unfortunately because the tumor is so wrapped up in thick blood vessels they did not get enough of a sample to make a determination between the two. They offered to take him in for a surgical biopsy today which after careful consideration we agreed to. The vet is confident that if it is the treatable kind we have a good chance of fighting it as it doesn't appear to be widespread at this time, and Roo is very healthy otherwise. The cost is substantial though. I ran it by Sarah of @livelikeroofoundationand without hesitation she said to do the surgery and they would take care of it. I am humbled and emotional and so very grateful for them and everyone who has donated to their amazing organization on Roo's behalf. My son takes immense comfort in knowing that Roofus may even be helping other dogs and families in similar situations. This has been a tough few weeks but you all have made it so much easier with your kind words, love, and prayers. Thank you just doesn't seem adequate enough. It really has meant everything. He is at the vet now. I will keep you all updated on how surgery goes. ❤️ #rescuefamily

Going through this with Roo, and my son, I can't put into words. I can't even see these words I'm writing through my tears. My heart just hurts so bad every second of the day, even as I try so hard to stay strong for them. This all started just 2.5 weeks ago. We noticed Roo walking funny on his back leg and brought him to the emergency vet immediately. He has hip dysplasia and they thought with all the snow he may have slipped and torn something. We did an xray (of which he's had many on his hip already) saw nothing, and went home with some pain meds. Visited his regular vet 2 days later where she decided to do a back xray and discovered the mass. After 2 biopsies and multiple ultrasounds we have learned so far we are dealing with either hemangiosarcoma or histiocytic sarcoma, both of which are very aggressive, horrible cancers. Yes Roo is in pain. We are managing his pain with medication (and ice cream) while we get through chemotherapy in hopes that he will have some pain free time left with us. I won't let him suffer but I also am not giving up. It's a delicate heart wrenching balance that I hope none of you have to go through, although unfortunately it is often part of loving these beautiful creatures. The incredible @livelikeroofoundation has stepped up to cover our vet bills during this time. I am so grateful for them and their organization it brings me to tears. If you feel like you want to help our Roo, along with countless other families in this position, please check out what they are doing and support their amazing work however you can. If you have experience dealing with either of these cancers I am all ears. I know it's not healthy but right now I am researching at all hours of the day. I wake up in a panic at 2 am every night and start reading for hours, grasping to any and all good news I can find. I'm not okay right now but I know we will get through this. Thank you, from the absolute bottom of my heart, for all the love you have shown us. My gratitude for you all and this community is endless. All my love - C #rescuefamily

And that’s perfection!

roofusandkilo's Media: Hi friends. First let me start by telling you that today Roofus is okay. He's in front of the fire

Hi friends. First let me start by telling you that today Roofus is okay. He's in front of the fire with his bff Ki munching on a bully stick. I'm not totally prepared yet to fill you in on the rest but we have had this social media account for 7 years now; Roo has been here from day one and a lot of you started following soon after. I feel like he is all of ours and you deserve to know what's going on as well. So here it goes... We know Roof has hip dysplasia. Hereditary, nothing necessarily caused it. He's had the best regular vet care, senior blood panels done, xrays, supplements, quality diet, all of it. This past week(s) we have had a ton of snow so when he started having a hard time walking on Saturday we figured he hurt himself, possibly a ligament or muscle tear. His back paw was curling under, which was totally weird, so we rushed him immediately to an emergency vet. They did xrays of his hips and found them to be okay considering, and prescribed him pain meds and sedatives to keep him resting so he could heal. Things were still strange Sun/Monday so I brought him into his regular vet Tuesday. Dr. Jodi immediately thought neurological with the way his feet were bending and did xrays of his back. We were there for 7 hours. What she ended up finding was actually something much worse. He has a very large tumor under/on his spine, between his pelvic bones resting on his intestines. It is something we could not have caught sooner as it is basically buried inside him with no visibility from the outside. It is now causing arthritis in his spine and making him lose function of his back legs. We have a strong feeling that this is an advanced stage of the dreaded C word but will not think that way until we know for sure. His appointment with the OVRA specialist is on Monday. He will have an ultrasound, they will aspirate the mass, and give us their advice and options from there. We are devastated. He is my son's best friend, his boy, and this is incredibly hard. He's only 7 1/2 - it just seems so unfair. I will keep you all updated as much as I can. 💙- C

Repost from @nwdogproject, some much needed good news ❤️ - You guys, ANGUS CAN BREATHE THROUGH HIS NOSE!!!!! 🥳😭🙌🏽❤️ The procedure could not have gone better. The surgeons said they are absolutely thrilled with the way things turned out. We are seriously jumping for joy! Dr. Wallach who has been caring for Angus @oaksvetcare went to visit him this evening and said it was amazing to see him finally not struggling to breathe and getting to sleep with his mouth shut. Once he’s healed up a little more and not so groggy from the anesthesia we will of course share a video, but for now enjoy this adorable pre-surgery photo of our boy. Such a strong, brave little man. ❤️ #teamangus, we hope you all know how truly wonderful you are. It’s because of all of YOU that Angus has come this far. We are so grateful to his incredible medical team and to each and every person out there that made it possible for us to be able to provide Angus with the level of care he’s needed. Together, we saved his life. ❤️❤️❤️ #thankyou

OK DO NOT TELL DOODERS THAT I AM SHARING THIS! We are being sensitive to her feelings and not talking about it at home. So I have to double check but out of like 1600 guesses I don't think anyone had the exact combo - she is such a unique weirdo!! I was blown away by the first and last ones 🤣😂. It's supposed to be the best one though 🤷🏼‍♀️ #swipeswipeswipe #embarkvet@embarkvet

GUYS I JUST GOT DOODERS DNA (they finally figured it out 🤣) AND I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!!! There are 4 prominent breeds. But meerkat, alien, pit bull, and Brain are not included so I'm not sure how much to trust the results... 🤷🏼‍♀️ The first person to guess the combo of 4 is gonna get a package from Doods herself and honestly I have no idea what she'd send you but let's go for it. Also the linemen just showed up at our house TODAY IS AMAZING!!!! #andgo #embark #resultssoon! #rescuefamily
