E299a, Boxer mix, Del Oro Shelter, Oroville, CA • This dog is still unclaimed. If you recognize this dog, please contact NVADG hotline at 530-895-0000. • “The Camp Fire burned fast and hot. It was very dry, with humidity in the single digits and heavy fuels – pine trees. Once it started it drove incredibly fast. People were in the hospital and were coming off of anaesthesia to get out. An ambulance caught fire. We saw a chocolate Lab – his pads were burned off. His eyes looked right through us. He was in shock, paralyzed mentally. We could feel the PTSD everywhere. We sheltered 2000 animals at the peak and are down to 1350 – horses, chickens, goats, sheep, reptiles. We pulled 62 Koi from a pond – no fish left behind. We rescued a hermit crab from a girl’s room. If we can’t capture a dog or cat, we’ll feed and water an animal in place – ‘shelter in place’. We send 20 people a day to feed and water the animals.” This series is thanks to #workingwithlincoln

Giovanni, Chihuahua (1 y/o), Butte Humane Society - Pet food pantry, Chico, CA • “We were in the fire storm in Paradise together. I got her and my snake, but I forgot my turtle in the backyard. The house behind us was already on fire. It was time to go. There was no time to think. I would’ve been freaking out a lot more if I didn’t have my pets with me. I had to be calm for them. We were evacuating in the traffic and there was a dog going from car to car looking for help. Giovanni is afraid of dogs but I said if it’s a nice dog I would let it in. It was a German Shepherd, so it was a risk, but I let her in and she started licking Giovanni. She had wounds on her face from the fire. They were both on my lap panting as we evacuated. I delivered her to a shelter and checked in on her every day until they found her home. Her name was Lola.” – This series is thanks to #workingwithlincoln

S3a, German Shepherd (Unclaimed female), Oroville Animal Shelter, Oroville, CA • This German Shepherd was displaced from her family during the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA. If you recognize this dog, please reach out to the NVADG hotline 530-895-0000. To support NVADG, please visit the GoFundMe link in bio. This series is thanks to #workingwithlincoln • “One of the best reunions we’ve seen at the Chico Airport was with a huge Mastiff and his owner, locked in embrace. The owner was fleeing the fire and the dog suddenly stopped and wouldn’t budge. It turned out there were downed power lines where they were going to walk. The dog saved his life. Samson. You can see it in the owner’s face, melting in each others’ arms. It was pure. Beautiful. When you find out the story you understand.”

Kelsey, Australian Shepherd, Oroville Animal Shelter - Oroville, CA • “Kelsey was rescued from the Camp Fire and identified through her microchip. We contacted her family and they have claimed her. She will be cared for by the North Valley Animal Disaster Group (NVADG) until her family is able to care for her again. These are Camp Fire animals – they will be treated specially because they’ve been through a lot.” Kelsey is lucky to have been claimed, but there are still many unclaimed dogs waiting to be reunited. The Dogist has set up a GoFundMe to help NVADG with their mission (link in bio). This series is thanks to #workingwithlincoln

Simcoe, Golden Retriever (3 y/o), The ABGB, Austin, TX • “We call the tufted hair on his head his ‘walnut’. It’s his command center. It’s where the two neurons in his brain rub together just right. His walnut is where his brain is. Our other dog controls him through his walnut, and she drives him to do stupid shit.”
