Hugh Michael Jackman (born October 12, 1968 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian actor, film producer and singer, who was especially known as Wolverine in the X-Men film series as well as the action thriller password: “Swordfish” (2001). He also achieved great success as a musical actor, especially with the role of Peter Allen in “The Boy from Oz” and as Jean Valjean in “Les Misérables” (2012). Together with John Palermo, he founded the film company Seed Productions.

Jackman is the youngest of five children of Christopher John Jackman and Grace McNeil, who emigrated from England to Australia in 1967. From the second marriage of his mother was later added an eight years younger half-sister. Mother Grace left the family in 1976, when Jackman was eight years old, and went back to England. He grew up with his father Chris, a Cambridge accountant. Hugh Jackman has been married to actress Deborra-Lee Furness since 1996 . The couple lives in New York and has two adopted children, one girl (2005) and one boy (2000). In November 2013, Jackman announced that he was suffering from skin cancer.

Already in school Jackman shone in the sports of rugby, cricket and swimming, and also in school performances. In 1988, he began to study communications science with a journalistic focus at the University of Technology in Sydney (originally with the aim of becoming a reporter). In 1991 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Communication).

During his studies, he took a drama course and then decided to become an actor. He began an acting education at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), which he finished in 1994. Immediately thereafter, he got the offer to participate in the ten-part television series “Correlli”. He played the role of a prisoner who falls in love with prison psychologist Louisa Correlli (played by Deborra-Lee Furness ). During the shooting, Jackman and Furness became a couple. They married in February 1996 and adopted a son and a daughter.

After Corelli he had some appearances on television. So Jackman hosted the program “In Fashion” (with Foxtel), and Conférencier at the "Fox Studio Australia" opening show in Sydney alongside Melissa Hoyer, and presented a Foxtel special on London's theater scene in "Hugh Jackman's West End."

In 1995, Hugh Jackman worked as a musical actor in the Australian performance of “The Beauty and the Beast”. He received the MO (Australian Tony Award) for "Best Actor" and also the Variety Club Award for "Best Male Actor in a Musical". This was followed by the musical "Sunset Boulevard". Jackman has gained international recognition since his performance of Curly in the musical “Oklahoma!” which was performed in 1998/99 at the London National Theater and filmed in 2000. He also starred in other plays such as “Romeo and Juliet” (Romeo), “Translation” (Hugh), “Tonight We Improvise” (Abette) and “Barbarians” (Maxim Gorky).

In 1998, Jackman made his screen debut in the Australian feature film “Trucker with Heart” in the role of trucker Jack Willis, writing down his unfortunate love in a romance and releasing it under the name of his beloved. In the same year he also turned “Halifax - Afraid of the Dark” for television. One year later, Erskineville Kings followed. Jackman played the role of Wace here.

The highlight of his career at the time was his appearance in front of 90,000 spectators when he sang the Australian national anthem in 1997 before the opening match of the Bledisloe Cup ( Rugby Union ) in Melbourne. In 1999, he was named both "Most Fashionable Man in Australia" and " Australian Star of the Year ".

For the movie X-Men , which lays the foundation for his international film career, Jackman was engaged at the last minute, as the originally planned Dougray Scott was needed for the filming of “Mission: Impossible II” two months longer than planned. After the two sequels from the years 2003 (X-Men 2) and 2006 (X-Men: The Last Resistance) Jackman took over in the offshoot movie “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” the role of Wolverine. In 2003 and 2004 he starred in the Broadway musical “The Boy from Oz” the lead role of Peter Allen and in 2004, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor. In 2006, he toured Australia with an arena version of the musical.

Hugh Jackman is also an entertainer. For example, he hosted the Tony Awards ceremony in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and is a frequent guest on various television programs. In 2009 he hosted the Academy Awards. Occasionally, he also posed for fashion magazines (such as Men's Vogue November/December 2006).

Jackman appeared in the comedy Scoop in 2006/07, lent his voice to “Happy Feet” and “Flushed Away” cartoon characters, gave life to the main character of the philosophically and cinematically demanding film “The Fountain”, and was considered revengeful in spring 2007 “Gluttonous Wizards in Prestige - Master of Magic in Cinema”.

In 2007, Jackman co-produced Viva Laughlin, a musical thriller television series. He played in the first episode himself. The series was discontinued after broadcasting the first two episodes due to low ratings and crushing reviews already again.

In the spring of 2007 - right after The Boy from Oz's arena tour - Jackman shot a thriller titled “The Tourist”. It is the second production of Seed Productions. After legal quarrels over the name, the film started with moderate success in America. In December 2008, Jackman was named the "Sexiest Man Alive" by People Magazine and was offered the host role for the Oscars.

Since the age of nine, Hugh Jackman has been supporting the Christian children's aid organization World Vision since the beginning of his acting career as an ambassador. In 2009 he traveled with his wife Deborra-Lee Furness to Ethiopia and visited the coffee farmers Dukale. This resulted in the documentary Dukale's Dream.

From May 3 to 15, 2011, he performed a singing show at the Curran Theater, San Francisco. He was assisted by an 18-member orchestra. The focus was on musical pieces, including “Carousel” and “The Boy from Oz”. In July, he appeared in Toronto with this show.

In early September 2011, it was announced that Hugh Jackman next to Russell Crowe as Inspector Javert would play the lead role of Jean Valjean in the remake of the musical “Les Misérables”, directed by Tom Hooper. For his performance as Jean Valjean he received Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actor, it also brought him an Oscar nomination. In 2013, he stood in front of the camera for Warner Bros. Canadian crime drama thriller movie “Prisoners” by Quebec director Denis Villeneuve. He had an uncredited cameo as Wolverine in the 2016 film “X-Men: Apocalypse”. In 2017, he reprised the character in the third Wolverine film, “Logan”, and also starred as P. T. Barnum in the musical “The Greatest Showman”. He won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nomination for the latter film.
