Photo by @TimLaman. Skier @RussLaman threads the trees while skiing untracked powder snow in Hokkaido. We traveled to Hokkaido in January to explore the beautiful mountains in winter, and experience the skiing conditions created by the extraordinary 15 meters of snow that typically falls in this area every winter. We were not disappointed! #Hokkaido, #Japan, #powder, #Japow. Shooting for @patagonia

Photo by @TimLaman. “People come to Antarctica to see the penguins, but they come back to see the ice”. That’s a quote from our Captain on the National Geographic Explorer on my recent trip, and I’d have to agree. This was my fifth voyage to Antarctica as a photographer for @NatGeoExpeditions, and I find the endless forms, shapes, colors, and textures that ice takes on all scales from small icebergs to giant glaciers to be endlessly fascinating. It’s one of the things I really look forward to. This iceberg arch is just one little example. Any ideas how this could form? #Antarctica, #iceberg #arch.

Photo by @TimLaman. A rare view of a Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise spreading his colorful wings, photographed in West Papua, Indonesia. The Birds-of-Paradise Project is going on tour with @NatGeo Live! Come hear Ed Scholes and Tim Laman live in Gainsville, Florida on Jan 23 as we share the story of our ongoing project exploring and documenting the amazing Birds-of-Paradise, like this new image of the Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise. We’ll reveal recent discoveries, as well as share our vision of how BoP’s can be the international icons for protecting New Guinea’s rain forests. Photo by @TimLaman. Hokkaido, Japan in black & white. It has been snowing so much of the time I have been here, that it feels like a black & white world. This is Mount Yotei, a perfectly shaped volcano known as the “Fuji of Hokkaido”, with trees bowed by the snow in the foreground. I was born in Japan and lived here many years as a child, so it is always wonderful to be back! #Hokkaido, #Yotei, #snow, #black&white, #Japan.

Photo by @TimLaman. Skier @RussLaman comes up for air today in Hokkaido. If you are not a powder skier, you may not appreciate this photo. If you are, I don’t think it needs much explanation. Apologies to all those of you who follow me for my wildlife photography, but I occasionally have the urge to share one of my other passions… the pursuit of powder snow. Today in Rusutsu, Hokkaido, we found the goods after a 60 cm storm. #Japow, #powder, #Hokkaido, #Japan, #faceshot. Shooting for @patagonia.

Photos by @TimLaman. We had an amazing encounter the other day with these Orcas who approached and swam right under and around our zodiac while we were cruising along the ice edge in the Gerlache Strait region of Antarctica. Swipe to see how excited even veteran naturalist and Antarctic diver James Hyde (@JamesFCHyde) got about this encounter! Shot on expedition with @NatGeoExpeditions. I’ll keep posting my Antarctic images here @timlaman so stay tuned. Orca, #KillerWhale, #Antarctica.

Photo by @TimLaman. When you see penguins like these Gentoo’s in the water, you remember that they are really sea birds, and are totally at home there. They are amazingly swift and agile, totally different from their rather clumsy appearance on land. One cool thing that distinguishes penguins form other seabirds that instead of using their feet for power in the water, they “fly” through the water by pumping their little wings. It was very cool to watch this in the clear water next to Useful Island in the Gerlache Strait area of Antarctica where I made this photo from up on shore. Shot on expedition with @NatGeoExpeditions. Stay tuned to @TimLaman for a lot more from this shoot. #Antarctica, #penguin, #Gentoo.

Photo by @TimLaman. Hello from Antarctica! We had a wonderful visit to the Adelie Penguin colony on Paulet Island in the Weddell Sea during a snowstorm. Of course the penguins were unfazed by the weather, and were commuting between feeding in the ocean and their nesting sites way up on the rocky hillsides. So fun to watch and photograph these amazing birds up close. Note the pinkish undersides of this bird’s wing. That means this penguin is getting hot from all its hiking and is sending blood near the surface of its skin…. that’s how they cool down on a warmish Antarctic day that was barely below freezing. On expedition with @NatGeoExpeditions. Stay tuned to @TimLaman for a lot more from this shoot. @GitzoInspires, #Antarctica, #penguin, #snowstorm.
