I had an incredible opportunity to co-host a film screening for “The Sun Is Also A Star” with my friend who I love and admire so much, @michellelee.
Following the screening, we moderated a panel with the films leads, the talented and poignant Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton.
The film is absolutely beautiful— one of the best films I have seen in a long time.
It depicts immigrants’ stories about dreams, desire and the harsh realities they face, told with such empathy and sensitivity, deeply resonating with me. My deepest gratitude to the author of the book the film is based on Nicola Yoon, the director RY Russo Young, and Tracy Oliver, the Executive Producer and screenplay writer, for making this happen and bringing this story in our lives.
I was in tears throughout the film😭 It made me fall in love with the idea of falling in love. It truly highlights the strength of believing in fate, being unafraid and courageous to hope, and dreaming big. It truly moved me.
Yara and Charles are absolutely brilliant in the film. Their chemistry was on fire and they elevated this story in such a beautiful manner on screen. But off screen chatting with them, and being able to glance into their souls, made me fall in love with both of them that much more. They are both poised, intelligent, thoughtful trailblazers, and they bring me hope and brightness as they are our future.
Above all, what is truly amazing is what the film represents in today’s world and culture.

To see these two beautiful spirits— desirable, alive, soulful and thoughtful— being depicted on screen just as that and more, telling an “ordinary” story in the most extraordinary way, made my heart swell.
Furthermore, to have these stories— real issues both simple and complicated that effect the communities depicted— told by and about people who look like is us is the most powerful choice as it is accurate and considered visual representation.... (pls read below
