When temperatures warm up and food is available, brown bears 🐻 slowly begin to leave their dens. After 4-5 months of sleep and limited activity, male bears emerge first, usually starting in mid-March, followed by solitary females and females with yearlings or two-year-olds. The last to leave their dens are females with newborn #cubs. Spring greens and leftover winter carrion are first on the menu for these hungry #bears. One of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes in North America, Canyon de Chelly National Monument is a place of natural beauty and living legends. A dry climate, sheltering cliffs and the watchful eyes of local residents protect the distinctive architecture, artifacts and rock imagery. Completely within the Navajo Nation in #Arizona, the park’s signature vista is looking down at Spider Rock, an 825-foot-tall sandstone spire that got its name from the Navajo story of the Spider Woman. Rangers and #navajoguides share these stories to connect visitors to this special place. Acadia #nationalparkin #mainehas many claims to fame. It was the first national park east of the Mississippi. Generations of artists have immortalized its mountains, forests and rocky coastline. Over 3 million people visited last year. And of course, #acadiais the first place the see the #sunrise in the continental United States. That’s a lot to be proud of! Photo @AcadiaNPS courtesy of J.K. In early spring, American woodcocks start grooving with ancient dancing rituals. They strut in order to stir up food and once darkness sets in, males perform a "sky dance" to woo potential mates. Found primarily on the eastern half of North America, listen for their "peent" calls near dawn and dusk in a forest or thicket. This one was spotted early in the morning at #moosehornNational #wildliferefugein Maine, showing off excellent dance moves that work with a number of songs. Photographer Chris Archer recently captured this moment of moody clouds drifting over the volcanic landscape of #haleakala #NationalPark in #Hawaii. “It’s one of my favorite places on Maui. As sacred as it is beautiful, the colors are vibrant and the weather is ever changing. This is Ka Lua o ka O'o, one of the cinder cones along the crater.” Photo @haleakalanps courtesy of Chris Archer (@archer357). #travel #volcano #FindYourPark #usinterior

The Gunnison River shimmers like a ribbon in the pink light of sunrise at Black Canyon of the Gunnison #NationalPark. The Painted Wall rises 2,250 feet from river to rim, making it the tallest cliff in #Colorado. There are no maintained or marked trails for hikers who want to explore the inner canyon. Only individuals in excellent physical condition should attempt these hikes. For most of us, the view along the canyon rim is more than enough. On the International Day of Forests, we honor our connection to these remarkable places. From the water we drink and the houses we build to the vital space they create for wildlife, #forestsare part of our lives every single day. Johanna Hendrickson took this photo while exploring the Olympic National Forest in #Washington. “One thing I love about being in the forest," she explains " especially on a foggy spring day, is how quiet it is. All you can hear are your footsteps and occasionally the eerie call of a sooty grouse off in the distance.” #olympic #NationalForest is managed by our friends at the @u.s.forestservice. In one of the most picturesque valleys in the world, majestic #waterfallsflow over the edges of massive granite cliffs, their wispy mist drifting into cool forests and serene meadows. The stunning natural beauty of #yosemiteNational Park in #californiacan be difficult to fathom. Rangers often find visitors wandering around mesmerized by the light on the mountains or wildlife scampering through the trees. Don’t get lost, but lose yourself. It’s the first day of spring! We're excited about the promise of warmer weather and gorgeous wildflower blooms. Winter is still holding on in many places but at #bigbend #NationalPark, Texas #bluebonnetsblanket the hills of the desert landscape in impressive numbers. Seeing the official state flower of #Texas in full bloom across a field is a luxurious sight that you will never forget. March is a favorite time to visit the park as the desert floor is covered in white, yellow and purple flowers. Just remember, as you explore, please be aware and careful - getting distracted by beauty is a real thing. Sunlight slips through the branches of a Joshua tree to reveal a glowing heart. And for how important these trees are, it’s not far off to consider them the heart of the Mojave desert ecosystem. #Joshuatrees, twisted and unique as they are, are the stars of Joshua Tree National Park in #California. They support a variety of animal life by providing food and shelter in an otherwise harsh #landscape. Their silhouettes serve as a comfort to those who call this #desert home, and their story is one of survival. Photo by Raini Armstrong (www.sharetheexperience.org). #usinterior #travel #findyourpark

Discover rich history, spectacular overlooks, unique rock formations, cascading waterfalls and an extensive trail system at #cumberlandgapNational Historical Park in #Kentucky. Following in the footsteps of Native Americans and early pioneers, modern day explorers can scramble up mountains or descend into the park’s elaborate cave system. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for wildlife, too. Deer, black bears, rabbits, raccoons, opossums, gray squirrels, foxes and wild turkeys are commonly seen.
