“The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the Earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost….” The survival of these trees is threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive insect that reached the West Coast on plants imported from Japan in the 1920s, and was found in the eastern United States near Richmond, Va., in the early 1950s. A trio of hemlocks in Pisgah National Forest, left, have succumbed to the woolly adelgid infestation. Photo by James M. Davidson. This is why we need wildlife crossings 🐢 Wildlife overpasses and underpasses are keeping both animals and drivers safe, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). That's something we can all appreciate.

Highlighting our AMAZING content marketer, Allison! #internationalwomensday2019 #volunteer #activist #wecouldntdoitwithoutyou #wildlifelover ‘My name is Allison, and I love words. I graduated from Rowan University with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a concentration in publishing and editing. Two years and 3,000 miles later, I earned my Master of Arts in Rhetoric and Professional Writing from San Diego State University. Today, I’m back on the East Coast with my husband and three [rescued] cats. I recently earned another degree – a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science with a concentration in fish and wildlife management. I worked as an in-house marketing copywriter at a Philadelphia law firm for four years. My own articles have been published in The Huffington Post and in academic journals, and I am a published author, too! Creating great content for others is meaningful to me. I started Allison McClure Consulting to help businesses, organizations and individuals share their brilliance with future customers and/or clients through purposeful and strategic content. Did I mention I love animals? I am a member of The Wildlife Society, and I volunteered at a wildlife rehabilitation center when I lived in New Jersey.’

Wow. What a month. We so appreciate how much #blackleaderscontribute to innovation & activism in the environmental sector. We hope you learned about what other areas of the US are doing to combat #climatechange For DAY 28 we are highlighting George Washington Carver, a lover of nature with a keen intellect and desire to help people better their lives. He used his knowledge to make American farms flourish, which helped the nation as a whole. Born in the 1860s and leaving the earth on January 5, 1943, George was born into slavery, then becoming a botanist, inventor and teacher. He invented over 300 uses for the peanut and developed methods to prevent soil depletion. He was made a member British Royal Society of Arts — a rare honor for an American – and advised prominent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and President Teddy Roosevelt on agriculture and nutrition. Happy #blackhistorymonth2019

DAY 27 - #blackhistorymonth2019 #blackleaders #blackscientist #climatechangeisreal #obamaismyspiritanimal Warren Washington can trace at least one of the origins of his extraordinary scientific career — more than half a century of groundbreaking advances in computer climate modeling —  to a youthful curiosity about the color of egg yolks. “I had some wonderful teachers in high school, including a chemistry teacher who really got me started,” he said. “One day I asked her, ‘Why are egg yolks yellow?’ She said, ‘why don’t you find out?’” So he did. He still remembers the answer —  the sulfur compounds in chicken feed become concentrated in the yolk, turning it yellow. “I also had an excellent physics teacher,” he said, describing why he became an atmospheric physicist. Those teachers would be immensely proud of him today. There is no Nobel Prize for climate change, the world’s most pressing environmental problem. But if there were —  and there is an ongoing campaign to establish one — Washington almost certainly would be on the short list. He will soon receive the next best thing, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, often referred to as the environmental Nobel. He will be sharing the honor and the $200,000 prize money, announced Tuesday, with climate scientist Michael Mann, director of the Earth Systems Science Center at Pennsylvania State University. Before the evolution of sophisticated computers, scientists knew little about the atmosphere other than what they could observe outright. Then a young black physicist came along, eager to use early computers to understand the workings of the Earth’s climate. He collaborated in creating the earliest computer climate models and went on to advise six presidents about climate change : Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 2010 by President Obama.

wildvirginia의 미디어: A federal appeals court on Monday denied a request to reconsider a ruling throwing out a permit for

A federal appeals court on Monday denied a request to reconsider a ruling throwing out a permit for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline to cross two national forests, including parts of the Appalachian Trail. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a request from lead pipeline developer Dominion Energy and the U.S. Forest Service to hold a full-court rehearing. In December, a three-judge panel of the 4th Circuit sharply criticized the Forest Service, saying the agency lacked authority to authorize the pipeline’s crossing of the trail. The panel also said the agency “abdicated its responsibility to preserve national forest resources” when it approved the pipeline crossing the George Washington and Monongahela National Forests, and a right-of-way across the Appalachian Trial. “We trust the United States Forest Service to ‘speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues,’ ” the judges wrote in December’s ruling, quoting the Dr. Seuss classic “The Lorax” to summarize their decision. The ruling came in a lawsuit filed by the Southern Environmental Law Center on behalf of the Sierra Club, Virginia Wilderness Committee and other environmental groups. Representatives for Dominion Energy and the Forest Service declined immediate comment Monday. The 605-mile natural gas pipeline would originate in West Virginia and run through parts of North Carolina and Virginia. After the ruling in December, Dominion Energy spokesman Aaron Ruby said the court’s ruling was “at odds” with the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service. “All of these agencies agree that the Forest Service has the full legal authority to approve the Atlantic Coast Pipeline’s crossing of the Appalachian Trail,” Ruby said. In a joint statement, the Southern Environmental Law Center and the Sierra Club said the 4th Circuit’s denial of a new hearing “sends the Atlantic Coast Pipeline back to the drawing board.” The groups said they believe it is impossible to build the pipeline “without causing massive landslides and threatening the Appalachian Trail and our clean water.”
