This is “The Wise And The Wicked” by Jauz. Since 2015, Jauz has been been the front runner of the Bass House genre and has been making really great stuff since then, as well as some incredible live shows I have seen like his Ultra 2017 & 2018 set. I’ve been a fan for about 2 years now, which is when this album started to form, however, it features very little Bass House, and more of a mix of damn near everything. By far, this has to be the coolest conceptual album I’ve listened to, and the singles leading up to it seemed to prove me right. The idea of this album is to have two opposing forces displayed through the songs. It is divided into 4 parts, each with different moods/themes to represent both the wise, the wicked, and the unity of both. When I first heard about this concept, I thought I was going to be polarizing, but each time I listen through, it becomes much more clear. However, it’s not all perfect.
The criticism o have for this album is its length. Including the 5 interlude/story tracks, it’s 23 songs long, and I will be honest, about a third of it are songs I won’t really go out of my way to listen to. Songs like “Acid or Techno,” and “Back Again” just don’t really seem to fit and aren’t really great songs to have on an album like this. With such a polarizing concept, Jauz seems to miss as much as he hits, however, when he hits, he hits HARD.
My absolute favorite track on this whole project is “Fade” if you don’t listen to this album, at least listen to “Fade.” It is a drum and bass song with probably the most relatable lyrics I’ve ever heard in my life, and it also shows what Jauz is able to do with a specific sound of drum and bass, while fitting it with the theme of the album. Other standout tracks include: In The Zone, Soldier, Rave With Me, Gassed Up, Velvet Paradise, Keep The Rave Alive, and Super Fly.
Overall Rating: 7.75
If you read all this, thank you, I really appreciate it, and if you have any suggestions, please feel free to let me know, and tell me what you think of this album.
