An incredible shot from across the pond! Members of the Historic Environment Scotland conservation team were involved with this project laser mapping the iconic #MountRushmore. Our staff are on the top of the head somewhere! Thanks to @natgeo for sharing! • Photos by Richard Barnes richardbarnes | I did a story illustrating how laser archaeology works, and one of the preservation sites was Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The team I worked with from CyArk, based in the U.S., collaborated with Historic Scotland and the Glasgow School of Art. The laser archeologists repelled down every one of the granite faces, using laser technology to map within an accuracy of 3 millimeters. The mapping is used to create 3D models, so that historic monuments may be restored in case of erosion, natural disasters, war, or terrorism. Thanks to related technology, art historians and architects will be able to reconstruct Notre Dame, recently ravaged by fire. Mount Rushmore depicts four U.S. presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. It was constructed over a period of 14 years in the Black Hills of South Dakota. #richardbarnes #laserarchaeology #mountrushmore #blackhills #southdakota

Thought this was pretty cool. They are laser scanning Mount Rushmore so that if anything happens they can restore it. This same stuff is why they are able to restore Notre dame. #coolshit #Repost @natgeo • • • • • • Photos by Richard Barnes @richardbarnes | I did a story illustrating how laser archaeology works, and one of the preservation sites was Mount Rushmore National Memorial. #Repost @natgeo • • • Photo by @richardbarnes | For a story on laser archaeology, I photographed a site called Rani-ki-Vav, “the queen’s stepwell,” in Patan, Gujarat, India. Stepwells are used to obtain water, and can go as deep as seven or eight stories into the ground. Rani-ki-Vav was constructed to resemble an inverted temple that descends to seven levels, emphasizing the spiritual aspects of water. It was constructed in the 11th century as a monument by Queen Udaymati in memory of her husband. The stepwell was flooded by a nearby river and wasn’t excavated until the 1980s. The carvings of Hindu deities were incredibly well preserved by the silt over the centuries. Today, this site is a place of gathering and celebration. The technicians from CyArk with whom I worked used laser scanning technology to survey and record every inch of the monument, which required scaffolding and repelling down the interior walls to the water source below. #cyark #laserarchaeology #preservation #archaeology #ranikivav #India

Rani ki vav is an intricately constructed stepwell situated in the town of Patan in Gujarat, India. It is located on the banks of Saraswati River. Rani ki vav was built as a memorial to an 11th-century king Bhima I by his beloved wife queen Udayamati. #ranikivavstepwell #carvingart #stepwell #patan #nikond7200 #netgeotravel #netgeotravelindia #netgeoyourshot #archaeology #laserarchaeology #preservation #cyark #vacation #travelbogger #blogger #neverstoptravelling #neverstopexploring #explore #exploregujarat #exploreindia #carvintage #oxfordarchaeology #vadodaraphotography @photographys__love @archaeologyofindia @archaeologymagazine @antiquearchaeology @archaeologyart
